I am Michele's Piece of Soot

by Michele Schottelkorb

I testify on your nonchalant behalf

when you smile, your eyes give you away
and I seem
to waste precious moments
trying to figure out my motive for caring

there are those who say
a person cannot change
unless they want to

when you forever put yourself before others
the world slowly fades to gray

I am charcoal.

Author's Note: the title is in the spirit of "Fight Club"... this is the first poem i have written in a very long time...

I am Jack's complete understanding of the meaning here. Nice job, Michele

I definitely clicked on this because of the Fight Club reference :) And this reminds me of my style in a way. I enjoyed this.

I am excited to read a new piece of yours. Fading to charcoal through caring for others is an interesting thought. =)

This poem speaks some truth to it.
