Imagine (be at peace)

by Danielle Ernst

though I will walk on rain-slicked sidewalks
and broken pavement
I will still close my eyes and see
a brilliant field of a deep green
my toes tickled by mischievous dandelions
and though it will be another overcast afternoon
I will feel sun on my face, feeling soft winds
dance around my body, through my hair
take a turn into an alleyway lit only by dim streetlamps
and light from despairing windows above
I sing a song to match them
and only Sally knows what I feel
but inside
I sing words of a limitless undying love
and I make impossible wishes on stars still hidden by daylight
wishing for a better world
for the happiness of all that inhabit it
though rain will fall, I walk on
though the city will restlessly toss and turn
though creaks of iron, breaking glass and angry words will
drown out my voice
I will keep my eyes shut tight
and feel only warm rays caressing me
I will
be at peace, caring neither for my destination, nor my start
and I will stop singing and listen to the birds
the grass, the trees-
the world-singing to me
