Brown-eyed girl

by Danielle Ernst

there is no sky blue
no mint green, no
rich hazel with flecks of gold
I am a brown-eyed girl
just your average color
plain...normal...
But there is nothing normal
about what these eyes have seen
about what stories they could tell
the tears they have let fall

my eyes
the color of earth
have seen all of hell
and failed to focus on heaven
and they have long searched the sky
from an upturned face
in a heavy rain
wishing on hidden stars
I could only hope they were really there

so while you can never tell me
how when the light hits my eyes
They look like stars in the sky
or praise the precious metals God sprinkled
here and there
no green- blue seas
that look so deep
If one could see
What these plain eyes have seen
They’d know just how strong a girl can be
Just an average
normal
brown eyed girl like me

I love this. I also love brown eyes, though I don't think the two are connected. :)
