English 100

by Danielle Ernst

I'm watching spider webs blow in the wind

criss-crossing the corner of the open window

Trying to think of something to write

There's nothing important

Just a lazy Friday afternoon ahead

I wanted to go

And nap at the park

in some shady spot in the grass

After class

But he forgot to bring a blanket

So maybe we'll just sit in the car

Listen to the radio

Talk about

Life

For an endless hour

But for now

It can wait

I have to first examine all

Of the places the paint's chipped off the wall

Another breeze

There goes that spider web again

Someone wrote their name here on the window sill

and drew a little mushroom beneath it

Then a squeak of the door and the professor walks in

I glance back at the window

And just like my train of thought

The spider web

is broken
