C3H6O3

by Arthur Parten

so now all the rust is stripped off
and all the paint and maybe some of the mettle too
I can reflect on the hundred noble lies I've told today
and the muscles I've used and in doing so remembered I had
and my tendency towards pithy reworkings of well known quotes

we who are about to live salute you

eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we've got to remember today

and how they amuse me sometimes
others they just make me think about something Mel Brooks said about laughter
that we laugh when something is wrong and it's what makes us human
but maybe it wasn't Mel Brooks it might have been Robert Heinlein or you or me

as delusions of profundity start to creep in
sleep mercifully takes me

Author's Note: I worry that I might rely too much cut here on plays on words.

This is just a romp, Arthur. Wonderful reading. Thanks.
