Insomnia

by Diane Paley Davis

Insomnia keeps me awake half the night
My mind wanders in all directions
while I toss and turn in desperation
I open my eyes
A light shining through my window
catches my attention
The sound of a car’s engine revving
halfway up the street, then silence again.
I close my eyes and try once more
to let my mind drift to nowhere
Yet sleep eludes me still.
Sleepless nights have no mercy
on my weary mind.

Author's Note: Yes, this poem came to my mind while I was lying awake one night.
