Telltale Embers

by Nicole Assenza

I used to steal
the spark in your eyes
the look they never thought
you’d see for me
now you can lie but I
can still find the ashes
of the part of you
that burned for me
now you can deny it all
as long as I can still smile
my tinderbox smile
and how those embers glow
even if only I know
now you can ask yourself why
and I can tell you
it’s because
I still got matches, baby

Author's Note: Just wrote this. I was thinking about someone's lovely comment on how every poem I write has a "quality of heat".
