Contemplation by moonlight

by Robin Patterson

Sometimes in the dark still night
I lie sinfully awake

Wishing only to accost the echoes of
   Your footsteps beneath the stair
Or catch glimpse of symbolic shadows that
Might convince me that you’re there

Ebony blankets me out of sight
It’s cloak I do take

   I climb impervious forbidden walls
That separate us in my mind
Swim dangerously past the iron clad gate
To some key I hoped I’d find

Shimmering stardust beckons twilight
Dream state I forsake

   Revealing the dangerous journey trespassed
With reckless abandon to find you
I survey the trail and my now scar swept heart
Wondering, are you worth all I go through?
