I Hate Christmas (my apologies to Dr. Suess)

by Vere Mantratriad

I've heard it said
that christmas is the best time of year
but this is not my opinion
I always cringe when yuletide is near

I know you're wondering one thing
what could be the reason?
how could someone hate
what is always thought to be the best season?

I know some will think there's a problem in my head
but I really don't care what is said
the reason for these thoughts is not the size of my heart
but the cracks inside of it tearing me apart

every year christmas comes with presents and cheer
and the relatives who would benefit from just one less beer
stockings will be filled not with toys but lies of Saint Nick
and parents who think their betrayal is just downright slick

and everyone will decorate with garland and lights
and those who don't will go out to see the marvelous sights
smiles on their faces all the girls and the boys
they'll explode into song making such NOISE NOISE NOISE NOISE

and I'll sit in my room hoping for a wake up pinch
while I grumble and sneer, channeling The Grinch
plugging my ears from the laughter and singing
trying to block out the memories it's bringing

because christmas, to me, is not about joy
it's not about giving or receiving that one special toy
it's remembering bad memories that you've put aside
all of the feelings you tried so hard to hide

these couple of weeks of shopping and happiness
could never drown out a year's worth of sadness
and the hundreds of dollars my parents would spend
could never make up for the years of pretend

pretending to be happy and perfect
setting aside feelings of hate and neglect
the hitting and name-calling and screaming
and knowing that my wish of a new life was only dreaming

I don't mean to ruin it for you, you shouldn't feel bad
just because you have all the things that I never had
I just wanted to tell you, to try to explain
why I view christmas with such awful disdain

so don't call me a grump, a Grinch or a Scrooge
it's insensitivities like these that make the pain huge
I just want to celebrate in my own little way
without all the cheer and fake things people say

I want to spend christmas quietly this year
with my own make-shift family that I hold so dear
made of my best friend, our cats and our dogs
without any lights or burning yule logs

and maybe this year I'll find a new meaning
and next year will be much more appealing
I might decorate and join in the feast
next year I might even carve the roast beast!

but until then, my dear friends
let me make my own amends
and don't force the spirit of christmas on me
sometimes it's just better to let people be

Author's Note: repost of a poem written exactly 2 years ago... I wanted to rewrite it for this year, but I seem to have run out of time. Oh well.

Hi Vere, Just finished redin it, I Hate Christmas, (my apologies to Dr. Suess.) It's a great write, so full of emotions. This is so sad, it makes ya wanta cry. I'm so sorry that you feel that way about Christmas. Having bad experiences doesn't help one. Each person has their own way to celebrate Christmas. Christmas, isn't just about gifts and pretty lights. It's about the birth of our Lord. It's okay. No, I won't call you a grump, Grinch or Scrooge, or any other bad names. It's okay to spend Christmas the way you want to. No, there's nothing wrong in your head either. For some the holidays is very hard for them, for different reasons. You may not want to hear this, But I pray and hope you will heal your heart, so it won't hurt or have cracks in your heart anymore, like it's broken. I hope you know, I mean only well. My dear friend, it's okay, to make your own amends. You enjoy it your way, who knows maybe someday you will carve the roasted beast. :) :)
