If only I could learn to keep my mouth shut...

by Amanda Bullington

I've been craving a normal kind of life today
The kind of life in which you fight with your parents
And get muddy with your dogs and track mud all over
Until you get grounded.

I've been craving a little bit of sanity today
The kind you can only find sitting alone
Getting choked up from the Oprah show on TV
Until somebody calls and you don't have to cry
By yourself anymore.
(hey, salepeople watch Oprah too.)

I've been craving a normal kind of life today
The kind of life in which you burn your bagel
And the butter's all gone so you're mad and you
Yell at your parents.
(then you're grounded again.)

I've been trying this new thing - avoidance - today
Because nothing good ever comes from a phone call
You've been trying not to get when you're offered
A new life, house, school...away from your parents.
(and worse, the person you love.)
