The Greatest Thing To All Mankind

by Hartwell Davis

The greatest thing to all mankind
Will be when we leave this world behind
And explore the new of the hereafter
And know whether sorrow or laughter
Will be the end of each soul’s days
For the deeds one did in the human race.

It might be heaven, it may be hell
But while we’re here we cannot tell
For no man judges his own fate
Though he may strive for the golden gate
And risk each thought for his reward
Yet miss the hand of the Lord.

For deeds though good are not all
That matters to get inside that wall
For it takes deeds along with love
To insure a home in the place above.
For only God now holds the key
That unlocks the gate to you or me.

But we won’t know until the last day
If deep inside and hidden away
Was a sin we forgot to repent of
Or a neighbor who never received love
From this man who hopes that God’s good grace
Will insure his home in the Heavenly place.
