My Love Found

by Hartwell Davis

My first sight of my love, the smile that would light a room
And cause others to smile in return.
Offering me a cup of red zinger tea,
A small piece of cake
But the hand extended reached into my heart.
Why did I fail and have to leave?
I know that you took time to grieve.
But time has passed while you were gone
And I too traveled another road of life.

My second life began with God.
Could anything be added to life
That could make earth into heaven?
Only the Lord could give joy
But he can give it in the birth of a child or the peace in a home
Or the touch of a hand from someone you love.
Life for me was a road well traveled.
It began at the gate of heaven as I entered the kingdom.
It wound its way through the place where my love lived
And out of her room to ways of love, and pain, and sorrow.

I looked back in time trying to glimpse a smile and the outstretched hand
The heart of my love I loved.
I could never walk down that road again.
You cannot go back in time or life.
My love was behind me, in the past.
But my God was there too and I learned that my road was not traveling away from love and joy
For God said so many times, Return to me, I’m here.

It was the wisest man on earth who shared with me
that the road of life has been a sea,
and all the rivers of life go there.
“All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full:
unto the place from whence the rivers came, thither they return again.”

My road of life became a river of life
as God can bring me back again.
I entered into the room and my love smiled.
She offered me a cup and extended her hand
I’m here again, my love,
and my hand reached out to touch the heart
That long ago had touched mine.
