Understated

by Richard Vince

Nothing is visible but lights
And darkness; so this
Could be anywhere to me,
But to you, an unfamiliar,
Albeit unilluminated, landscape?

I've seen what passes the window
On this stretch so many times
That I no longer look;
I barely remember my attitude
Being any different. It is
Part of "home" now for me.
Perhaps "home" is merely
The place at which we
No longer look?

If you were here, though,
Your eyes would be wide
So as to absorb as much
As possible of these surroundings
That may never fill
Your gaze again. I would
Merely sit back and enjoy
Your joy and wonderment.

I look forward to introducing
You to all the understated
Wonders that have long since
Become ordinary for me,
In the hope that they will form
Pleasant memories that you can
Enjoy for a lifetime.

I only hope that the world
On the far side of these two
Panes of glass will be
All you hoped for.
