When I Awoke to Snow

by Mary Ellen Smith

I slept last night then heard the silence

When I awoke at dawn’s first break

And tiptoed across the chilly floor

Down the stairs and to the door

Opened it to see the sight

That softly fell all thru the night.

Everything was slightly rounded

Every sharp and angled edge.

I hardly recognized the scene

All scrubbed up and made so clean

The first of snow to snow this year

But not the last is what I hear.

I stepped outside I was so driven

Although the cold did bite me so

And as my eyes took in the sight

That blanketed throughout the night

I thought I heard a bell ring, ringing

And the whispers of the angels singing.

The sun was glistening roof tip tops

Blinding brilliant shining bright

And as it rose above the hills

It didn’t melt the winter chills

But sugared all within my gaze

Oh what lovely winter days!

I love this, Mary Ellen. Written with joy and youthful discovery. Wonderful details. Thanks.
