Brueghel

by Leonard M Hawkes

A good old friend
From my youth--
A time bright and passionate
When all was possible
And all Truth clear.
We met beyond the sea
In your intimate,
Welcome home, and yes,
I longed to love you--
But we found each other.

Age has given experience,
Knowledge, many more friends;
But seeing you now,
Knowing you in all your
Faded Flemish commonality
Seems to welcome me,
Seems to warm me still,
Like the firm embrase
Of a misplaced but
Long enduring love.
