River Flower

by Alison McKenzie

You are always there
In the middle of my field
Blossoming in the noonday heat
And fragrant
How your sweet beauty sings to my soul

I walk away, it's too intense
We cannot be lovers
For the bird in me wishes to pluck you
And your fragile roots cannot

The leaves blew onto my field
And nearly buried your reaching tendrils
While I shuffled into the new season
I saw your purple love brilliant
In the crisp autumn air
How I love your strength and courage

Of course I walk away
My ears can only absorb so much
Of your tender voice
For your fragile roots remain

The first snow has fallen
And I run to find your marker
I am sure you are ruined
Trampled or surely eaten
Instead I find you still blooming
Against all natural odds
Waiting for me
You incline your stalk toward my frigid hands
And I inhale your essence
Into my aching lungs
I did not know I was drowning without you

Oh sweet, gentle darling
You are welcome always in my soft and fertile meadow
Even though we cannot be lovers
I will forever be your companion,
If you like
Perhaps we will grow old together
Our last breaths taken in unison
Our first flight to Spirit unfolding in tandem
Sweet gentle darling
How you move me
My every tear come to nourish your hungry soul

I really love the tone and texture of this piece. Not a sonnet in form, but it "feels" a bit like one. Well written. Thanks.
