The Last Laugh

by Diane Paley Davis

I gaze into your crystal eyes
Searching for some truth.
That lovely face you're wearing
Is, I know, only a mask
That covers the ugly truth inside.

Your words are too familiar,
I've heard them all before,
But now I know their meaning,
And now your words don't fool me
Like so many times before.

You think it's all so humorous,
You've caught me in your trap.
You think you've really tricked me
With your lies, but you don't know
The laugh is really on you!
