A Higher Education

by Nicole Assenza

O, sinful beauty
Stark, violent white anatomy!
It’s mine
Pulled apart and wrought
By the unskilled surgeon
(Unclean hands! I scream inside my head)
Who in his works describes
His compendium of years
This beauty of sin--
A psychotic bloodlust
A hunger of the youth
I see swimming
Drowning and pacifying, I am in it
In His eyes
An innocent, yet parched look
And this never happens
Or let’s say it hasn’t happen yet--
But now He’s
Breaking me open
Then
Forgetting His instruments
Inside me
Now stitched up
Now scraps of a much younger girl lie on the floor
Now I’m awake
Relieved by the pain
The passing of the moment
A scab that never heals
And in this hazy state
I do not understand
Why I must be the patient?
My snow capped mountains desecrated
By beautiful hands
By a learned young man
Who is so more skilled than I—
(Isn’t that a lie)
But Now
I’m an Eve who eats the apple
(He was my First snake)
And Now
I know what He knows
And lord, he taught me well!
I’ll take up His profession
I’ll become a doctor
These hands, smooth and cunning and sharp,
Will know just what to do
Know how to serve you
And the earth will shatter with His joy

O, my beautiful sins to come!
