Chicago Summer Nights

by Sahar Rahim

Memories of you and me
Haunting nights as I stay up late
Trying to figure out what was wrong
I can’t pretend you didn’t hurt me
Betrayal was your best friend

Time doesn’t stop
But it helps with the pain
You move forward
I stay the same
Some day you’re going to realize
I truly believe
It was always supposed to be me

Chicago summer nights
Staring at patterns in the sky
We were so young and so in love
What went wrong
What more could you be looking for

Fly ahead a couple years
We’re still friends you still call me my dear
And though we say we want nothing more than memories
I hear you still want me

Chicago summer nights
Staring at the patterns in the sky
We were so young, so in love
What could have possibly gone wrong
What more could you be looking for
I’m no longer that same girl

It took a while, for me to mend again
But when I said I’d be fine
I wasn’t lying
I’ve met someone amazing
And all you can do is turn away
You’ve finally realized what it meant to have me

Chicago summer nights
Staring at the patterns in the sky
We were so young and so in love
But time moves on
I moved on

Author's Note: One of my friends wants to see a poem and possibly put a melody to it. I was thinking this one...but I'm not so sure if I like it as a poem. So any feedback would be great!

This is an amazing piece! I felt your dance in the relationship - it has rhythm - it has heart - it has everything necessary to be a song... let me know what happens/happened. We haven't chatted for a while so I wish you all the best and since its cold here in Chicago... I wish you warmth, safety and love. Your friend, ~N
