Quartet

by Leonard M Hawkes

“A poor wayfaring man . . .”

And I saw the room—
The southeastern bed chamber
Of a brown stone edifice
In Hancock County, Illinois.

And in it I saw the brethren;
And again the tragic enactment
Of that bloody frontier sacrifice.

And I felt it; felt the Faith.
Felt the eternal offerings
That afterward streamed westward—

West beyond the rivers,
Beyond the open prairie,
Rising, rising upward,
And breaking into mountains.

Now, from the strength
Of the hills we bless thee;
And as the morning breaks,

Millions shall know
Brother Joseph again—
The seer, the seer,
Joseph, the seer.
