Softening

by Trisha De Gracia

There is a moment between arms -
a mother's arms
a friend's arms
a lover's arms
- that I think that I must feel like her
somehow.

The promise made inside the scent
of a warm human being
inside of a heartbeat you wait on
the comfort and safety that hangs on that breath...

moment's I feel like I must be like her
in a way
aren't we all?
There's a hole that needs filling
inside of ourselves

And sometimes we choke on the wrong things we put there
and sometimes it's like you'd do anything not to feel empty inside
and sometimes you just want to drop every pretense
and drown so your lungs can feel something.

There's a deafening quiet inside of the lies that we all tell ourselves
isn't there.

It's just that
Sometimes I feel like I have all the pieces
to make up this picture
and sometimes I feel like
I don't.

I like the honest awarness of need in this, it's so tactile. I'm drawn to "and drown so your lungs can feel something", among many others. Beautifully penned, a great read.

furthermore the depth of your imagery evokes in the reader a greater sense of life in general. You make weighty claims bout how, we in our own lives, may find fulfillment. Your true understanding of open honesty makes this poem pulse with genuine emotion. lol

Trisha, the emotional candor in your words is experiential - I think we've all felt this way, no matter how old or whether we are a man or woman. Too many times it's wanting the other person to "confirm" our being that helps us feel this way - we're not complete without them, or so we think, when really we are. That's not to say we should remain alone - we do need others - and you've expressed it emotionally without being over-the-top. Yes, a very interesting read.
