Out of Focus

by Rebecca Lin

Staring at the screen,
images become unclear,
out of focus.
Dear, you never knew how to deal with that.

She said she didn't want to be herself,
not anymore at least.
She said she wanted to change her appearance;
it would make her emotions happy,
but not her soul.
I talked on the phone with her for hours,
listening to her cry
about math problems and grades.
I knew it must've been more than that.

She said life was just full of moments,
some good, some bad,
some lackluster,
just unmemorable.
She said that we all should just go along for the ride.

Staring into a room
full of people,
your eyes are a camera.
You only focus on one thing at a time.

Despite what she told me,
I knew photography was never her thing.
