so sure we were onto something

by Vere Mantratriad

you must remember
there are still
ladies with pushups
and parasols
stepping on coats

but don’t you know
some of us have need
to cross oceans
no overcoats could cover

still they’re getting away with
their damsel in a dress theme
I’m still wearing his pants
making me colder
locked in an icebox

keys held on a ring on a heart
where there are belles
writing it off, standing off
climbing me off of his cross
that those girls constructed

knowing I would be
the one to climb
spread my arms
and be done

still holding his hands
only climbing up to
hold him down
he’s still hanging there
begging for pardon

beg your pardon, you must
remember, some girls know
to make him the martyr
let him barter his own
not mine

I like the coming-of-age factor in this piece, it brings the reader full circle in someone else's footsteps. Great read.
