Swing this way

by Kimberly Rhode

His candle burned through two shots
of J.D.
Mr. Dragonfly, said it would bring
prosperity.
It had to be a Friday,
he had to walk away with a scarf
around his face.
I'm ready to say
I'm ready for something
to take care of.
I blew the candle out
halfway down.
Now I can say this gift was
put to use, while I washed
my laundry, explained to Helena
the rain, a drizzle soft and
forceful.
In the middle of it all,
lugging beer and nilla wafers
on my back,
I went numb, I forgot where I was,
all I wanted was to make him
soup, surrounded by green wax,
his witch hat.
