"No One I'd Rather Have"

by Max Phineas

She leaned over and kissed him goodbye.
Goodbye forever.

Gingerly placing a hand to his lips,
He watched her disappear into the building.

Forever.

He didn't understand at first,
Though she promised that he would.

A ball of fire;
Racing toward his parked car;
Collapse.

Breath caught in his throat,
Stomach knotted,
He picked up his cellular.

"There's no one I'd rather have backing me up..."

He understood.

Author's Note: Inspired by the end of a television show, believe it or not...

Must have been some tv show! Sounds like the end of Stephen King's The Stand. Watch more tv, Cole, if the results are like this. ;-)
