If I have Traveled

by Alison McKenzie

For if I have traveled
Every one of my uncharted miles
On the soles of my own feet,
But ask to wear your moccasins,
What, then, shall measure
The depths of my love?

And if my own vibration
Has driven every solitary beat of my oft aching heart,
Yet I dance
To the rhythm of your sacred drum,
What, then, shall measure
The heights of my joy?

And if unbidden tears fall
Through trails of laugh lines
And worried creases
While the sound of your voice
Summons my most brilliant smile,
What, then, shall measure
The breadth of my gratitude?

My love, become my heart.
Carry my journey’d soul in your embrace.
Fill my capillaries
With the essence of your destiny,
And bridge the canyon’d yesterday of separation
With the helixed strands of your desire.
Climb into me and build your home.
Once, for now, forever
Eternity’s secret unlocked.
