always keep a pen in your pocket (you know, just in case) by Lauren Pearli was not expecting surprise:
"to be honest, i never thought
you'd last this long,"
he said and added as an afterthought,
"but don't worry,
no one ever does."
some how
we had fooled everyone
with our candy-caned smiles
and rotten teeth.
and with onethousandandone reasons
why i shouldn't call you, i
pick up the phone, drunk on
life and sex and hope, and talk
to you only long enough for
you to hang up on me all
over again.
so i pretend my mouth is
swollen with liquor and i
didn't really want to talk
to you anyway.
it will just be one more latenight/
earlymorning in a bathroom
stall filled with past loves
and current ones and enough
fuck you's to last me
a lifetime.
and just so you know, i
write this story whereever
i go, so everyone understands that
i kicked you out of my life
and it wasn't the other way
around.
(and oh my god, he knew it all along) 10/22/2005 Author's Note: he is alan. you is the same as always. just so there's no confusion.

Posted by Jared Fladeland on 01/06/07 at 07:10 PM you have a way of words. you lead me one way and punch kick me the mouth the other. It's very disorientating but in the case of one this poem, it works. beautifully. |
