colorblind

by Kate Swearingen

they say that freedom dances in blindness
as if it were ambiguity herself that makes everyone free
scurrying through life with downward eyes and cold shoulders
everyone could be anyone but
no one really sees.

Ms. Ross knows what the world really needs (and it ain’t
mountains or hillsides, or even moonbeams.)
any day i’d rather be a slave to sensation than blind and free
and who knows but that, on lower frequencies,
i speak for you?

Author's Note: thanks to Ralph Ellison for the phenomenal last line of his Invisible Man
