How Can Love Be So Unkind?

by JJ Johnson

What am I to say to her when I'm allowed no voice?
Can I impose my will to make her sway?
Must I accept that I have no choice
If my guilt is judged equally when I have no say?

God you know, if you exist, I do not often pray
Yet I have heard it so often said
Where there is a will there is a way
Or is your decision cast before the case is pled?

I'm forced to wonder if love is more than just a word
To wonder if love is something good
To say it now sounds to me absurd
No other one seems so easily misunderstood

Was it an act of love or were we acting out parts
In a play cast by higher powers?
Is it a game to play with our hearts?
Time and time again sweet love so often sours

In my life I have often wished for "this and that" things
Many more wishes than I deserve
But if it's true, if it's life we bring
How can love be so unkind, whose justice does it serve?
