coincidence

by Frank Lee

It seemed too perfect,
the chemistry,
and the conversation.

I had pure intentions,
the coffee table,
and the pills.

We smoked cigarettes,
drank coffee, whiskey;
shared secrets, delusions, fantasies.

Made me think i were young,
made me feel young,
made me alive.

her eyes,
soft and innocent.

her voice,
poignant with retrospective.

i thought i played it cool,
almost,
too cool.

it could have,
and should have,
lasted all night.

but it ended with a kiss on the cheek,
and an awkward silence.
and i never saw her again.
