Where Will You Aim Your Hate?

by JJ Johnson

Warning voiced in black and white
No question in his breath
Nowhere to run, but run the race
Gaining ground, look back, see Death

In the coming revolution
Let me be the first to die
For I will not pull your tooth
Nor will I pluck your eye

Let me offer both my cheeks
To your bloody fisted hand
Strike me twice but hate me once
Cold reparations flood the land

I believe the words I’ve heard
While most would rather listen to lies
So long as one distorts the truth
So long as some are alive, hatred never dies

Once the breed you despise are dead
Who will you decide to hate?
And when there’s only one kind left
Will you decide your brothers fate?

Author's Note: Over the past few years, I have heard about a determined effort to bring a war between blacks and whites in America. I have not heard about this from whites, but from several black people I know and some I have heard speak about it publicly. There are variations to the method and timing, but there is confidence in it's happening. If not for conversations I have had with those I know and respect in life, I might think this was all a joke or a scare tactic of some sort. I have heard many blacks speak about reparations of various types as well. I have heard of everything from money to land to a simple, but official, apology from the US Government. Some say that none of those are enough because white racism is so deeply entrenched in American society and its infrastructure, that blacks will never have equality, even if they are the majority. And yet, when I brought this up to white people, they didn't want to hear it, didn't want to talk about it and pretended as if I hadn't said a thing. So I am left to wonder about why that is, and when it happens, I suppose the results will be exactly as expected. I wonder if I will be the only one not surprised. But I also know why no one wanted to talk about it. Humans don't want to let go of their hate. I asked a group of white people at a peace gathering, no blacks attended, about it and if we could make greater efforts to begin discussions, talk about the racial divide, but most importantly, get black people to come and be a part of it. I wonder how many people will read this and say to themselves, "he's out of his mind", "this is not going to happen", "yeah, it's a good idea, but I'll be busy watching LOST that night". Maybe they are busy planning for the Rapture and just figure this revolution thing is the beginning of the End Of Days. JJ

"Humans don't want to let go of their hate."
I think your Author's notes are as amazing and magnetic as your poems. Clearly I'll want to devote at least a complete day to reading poems from every chapter. Peace Love Jill
