am i there, here?

by Charlie Morgan

i am there now,
as i write;
i fancy that i can see the downs,
the huts, the plains,
the riverbed--that torrent pathway of desolation,
with its distant roar of waters
drenched red with native blood.

oh, wonderful, wonderful! so lonely and so solemn,
with the sad grey clouds above,
and no sound
to disturb my silent thoughts
of the day's length
and years lost in living,
or the sorrows gained.
