Sunrise Over Pensacola Bay

by Amanda L Marron

When I was going to “A” school in Pensacola, Florida, we had to stand rover watches. During these watches, we had to walk around the outside of the barracks and down to the beach, then back up to the Mega Building to check in with the ASDO (Assistant Squadron Duty Officer). One night I was on the rover watch from 0230 to 0730 and saw the most beautiful sunrise.

I was walking back down the beach as the sky changed colors. The sky shifted from murky black to chromatic blue to royal purple. The atmosphere transferred through the colors of the rainbow as it would a prism. The ocean out in Pensacola Bay was sparkling as though a thousand stars fell into its murky abyss. As I tasted the salty air, I could hear the breath of the Earth with every wave that reached the beach.

At this point, I was standing at the edge of the water just watching the beauty of this breath-taking sight taking place right in front of me. I was also wishing that I had a video camera to capture the wondrous moment. The sun was just under the horizon, yawning rays into the pearly sky. The sea gulls overhead were chattering, as the breeze picked up the excitement transmitting through the air.

The first bit of sun reached the horizon, like a golden crown ascending on a ball of crested fire. It was ascending slowly like a child refusing to leave his bed after a night of beautiful dreams. The sky’s backdrop was of reds, oranges, and yellows of all shades. Or as taken from Sylvia Plath’s poem Southern Sunrise, “colors of lemon, mango and peach”.

Slowly, the sky faded from crimson and gold, to its daytime sapphire tone. The sun fully risen and still climbing rapidly higher, I turned to go check in with the ASDO at the Mega Building and get off watch. The sunrise signaled that it was time for me to go to bed.

Author's Note: This was a paper I wrote for English 1101, for my Description Essay. I felt it was so good that I decided to share it.

My teacher's comments were "This is a successful appeal to the senses. Figuratives are unique and quite supportive of topic. The paper reflects a poetic tone which offers great appeal." I got a 93 out of 100.
