what i learned in school


I.
mainly, assimilation was an
integral part of survival. also, that
space could be reduced to a styrofoam mobile,
suspended thirty times from one ceiling, the
impossibility of seamless conformity
shown by each tiny universe’'s discrepancies.
suppression by gender is more difficult,
incidentally, than the order of the
planets.
posture; they were always stressing the importance of posture.
i had the telltale slouch of a boy.

II.
must be something about the bathrooms;
volleyball teams.
even the quiet shifting of melting ice
moves us towards exclusion. our
joints interlocking; bending--their obvious weakness--
stronger, still, than standing alone.
until there is a middle ground to stand on, i have
no use for
pronouns.
