Why I Will Cry On My Wedding Day

by Jeffrey Parren

Because it will be my happiest day yet
Where hard work, lovers come and lovers gone
Have built me up for this day
Finding my spiritual and mental completion
Long nights spent debating, conversing
Help made my decision an everlasting one

Because it will be my saddest day yet
When it comes time to dance with my mom
Who will I end up dancing with?
Images of my children
Asking about grandma
“Who was she to you, dad?”

Because it will be the day that manhood finds me
Officially a man in most senses
Fatherhood to come after
I envision my children-to-be
How good a parent I can be for them
Before I myself leave this earth far too early

Because everything will be perfect
Even when a hundred things go wrong
Seeing my wife (almost) walking down the aisle
Her white dress symbolizing innocence
Her white dress symbolizing a clean slate
The white canvas of life we will paint our picture on

Because it will be a new poem to write
A combining of two paths into one
Where the fork in the road becomes a clear highway
Waking up next to that someone who has risked
Their heart as I have mine
Breakfast will never be the same again
