Moon and River by JJ JohnsonA bright and steamy afternoon
Beside the shady path, I sat to rest my weary legs
As I looked up a lonely glimmer caught my eye
And I thought it odd, mixed in the blue, the moon seemed out of place
Next to the path, the flowing river
Filled the air with the peaceful rush of quiet water
Between the ripples, the pulsating shimmer rolled
While the orb of night tumbled over waves then faded out of sight
Rising from the green of ground
Fading with the Sun, behind my steps, the splashing drowned
By cars, where horses once strode over cobble stones
Along the way are reminder signs of history and bone
These ancient streets exclaim their story
Between the walls of homes much older than old glory
Clouds fill the empty sky, daylight casts a final sliver
Walking home through the Stockade streets, I saw the Moon and River 05/01/2004 Author's Note: Begun just before the first time I hosted a poetry reading and then finished later that night after it was over, Moon & River is titled after the Moon & River Cafe where the open mic reading is held. I began the reading when the Cafe opened on May 1, 2004. A companion piece to "Death Of A Virgin", after my first time reading at an open mic, I like finding inspiration in poetic events. JJ

| Posted by Michelle Angelini on 10/16/05 at 10:11 PM JJ, the imagery in this poem makes me feel like this is in a small town where everyone knows each other. Maybe there aren't many streetlights to obscure what can be seen in the sky. It feels homey, warm, and welcoming - a comfortable place. The words and phrases use speak of peacefulness.
