A Man in Flames

by Amanda Bullington

Encircled in flames,
The son of a bitch tried to
Play his way to becoming the
Ugliest, fattest, most pitiful
Human that anyone knew.

He stood (a mangled phoenix) between
The licks of orange and yellow already
Blackening his skin, already encased in
His own funeral pyre, for no one
Would come to his rescue.

Not even his tiny daughter could
Help him, surrounded as he was in
His own spectacle of glory on his
Dying day. It was the first and
Last time the world would see

Him for the man he was; yet still,
People stared or averted their eyes in
Shame while tears dripped down his
Daughter's face, burning her screaming
Father's visage into her mind:

Planting the twisted seeds of
Revenge for her to find behind
All those awful, choppy memories
Years later (when she realized
this phoenix would never again
return to human form).

Author's Note: I wasn't too sure about this one, but I'm posting it anyway. I had a dream, and this happened. Oh, but you can take it symbolically too.
