Filling a Body: Embryo

by Lisa Marie Brodsky

We know that perhaps there are no such things
as touching embryos. No, they are not
twins. One mother could be in line
at a Kroeger in Florida, the other in the vegetable
rows of Iowa, breaking the corn husks.
But these waiting babies will be best friends
one day. Florida will save Iowa’s life
in the dark, hair-over-the-face days of high school.
Iowa will invite Florida over to her first apartment
out of college. They contemplate
how connected they feel.
And when they sit
on the paint-peeling porch,
as you see their hands lightly touch,
it has to be true.
