asking for a diamond

by Charlie Morgan

when you ask for someone's heart
or soul
or even to lunch,
and you seem careless
about the endeavor.

you shouldn't worry about
her denial.

it's like asking at a border town
'did they find a diamond ring?'

they'll look at you like
you've lost your mind
and say 'they haven't seen a thing.'

so, tho you try with wings of wax
still it takes a cool love
to keep their form.

and she's been burned
countable times when
she soared too close to the flame.
