Brilliant Angel

by Alison McKenzie

I see you there in our field of butterflies,
Arms raised to the heavens,
Palms up in worship,
Hair cascading down your back
Like a golden waterfall -
Though your physical hair is short cropped
And tidy -
You are beautiful in discovery
And I adore your radiance!

You are my champion.
Did you know?
I mean to thank you now
For the numberless blessings
Your being has bestowed upon mine:

Your love blanketed my
Nearly soul-less babyhood,
When I didn’t coo or smile,
Crawl or roll over,
And without you
I am opaque.

Your inconspicuous unconditional love
Follows and precedes my journey,
Carpeting my path
Where I might have otherwise perished,
Shoring up my self esteem
When others threw their grenades,
Your love a treasure that has value beyond calculation.

Your wisdom is forever refreshing to
My wandering wonder,
And I love every moment of our unending conversations
Where we leave no stone of understanding unturned.

These words are so inadequate,
And still I say them so you might know
Just how grateful I am
That we are on this human voyage together.
My one desire?
That I may one day bless
As you have blessed me,
My brilliant angel.

Author's Note: In loving esteem to my aunt Celeste, my soul sister, whom I adore past, present and future, and without whose guidance I surely would be adrift.

the WAY you see your aunt, beyond her physical traits, is a beautiful tribute. i hope you show this to her!...."without you i'm opaque" is a brilliant line, and stanzas 1 & 3 were my favorite.

Your writing is such a raw, flowing torrent of emotion; everything is laid bare and there is such a purity and intimacy to your art. This piece warms me much as I would be warmed by basking my face in the sun. "And without you I am opaque." Something about that line is so striking to me, just beautiful.
