373 Semple Street

by Frank Lee

I slept in the basement for two weeks on the orange couch we found
on the street
Because I pissed my sheets
and was too lazy to wash them.
I threw my mattress out on the curb and a bum came by and slept on it.
The same bum who we played tackle football with in the street
and shared our bottle of Jack Daniels with.
We played home run derby with another bum;
He stole my wallet,
and all my money,
I didn’t have much money so I didn’t really care.
But, it goes to show how desperate and deluded anyone could be.
I found myself headed in that direction.
Valium up the nose
broken up over broken glass
no clean clothes
a leak in the ceiling of my closet.
We threw parties of massed proportions
my roommate had a couple abortions
fourteen months in a haze
it took a trip home, the ocean, and a bath
and I never went back.
