Dare the Moon

by Kim Bennett

Vixen cross the passage closer
What won't the charmers say?
Masquerades in the masks of satyrs
Dare the moon to say:

"Treat the soul with lenience
Hide the disguises,
Fantastic facades.
Torture the enchanter."

The love of the vanquisher.
The language of opportunity.
Be not the charmer,
But the bohemian.

Pan plays his song, chases to the end
Lusts for Gaia,
Refreshes with Poseidon
Dances with Apollo
And dares Diana.

Gaia is calm
But tempts the moon,
Who is thrice the beauty
Of the most fair faux face.

"Slaughter the disease,
Detest the sea, my love, Diana.
The waves distort,
Poseidon deceives."

Dares the moon to say:

"The grand waters, my love, Poseidon,
Swells, over-bounding.
Narcissus is jealous.
Caution the vain
Hideous beguilers,
Seducers."

"The sea is beauty, my loves, Diana, Gaia,
Apollo takes life away.
Golden charms of a golden snake.
Heed the sun,
Whose beauty blinds.
Burns,
Scorns,
Hides."

Dares the moon to say:

"The sun's glamour, my love, Apollo
Is hidden by brightness.
Would you deny?
You take dear Poseidon's procession,
His greatest joy!
Would you take my glow as well?
You are the tempter.
Scry for the answer,
Deceiver,
Thief,
Reflection."

The sun is life, my loves,
Life I do not steal, but borrow
Burning is brilliant, not Hell.
You call me a reflection,
Perhaps you see a reflection of yourself, Moon.
Diana is false!
A balance not, but a deceiver.
Her glow is not her own,
Taken from me.
Beauty lacking, she steals her soul.
Hides in shame, in darkness.
You! I dare the almighty moon!
Show us your true beauty!
Hypocrite!
Medusa!
Coward!?

Dares the moon to say:

...

Author's Note: I came to a workshop and was given a poem in French. We were supposed to write a poem based on what we thought the poem was saying, although I just rhymed the title "Clare de lune" to Dare the Moon and got this

it reminds me of Ovid's Metamorphoses (or more specifically, Mary Zimmerman's play based on Ovid's work with the same name)
