Moonlight Backwards by Kim BennettThe tree fell apart like Ash
Similar to its colour
Burnt out from its flaming and vibrant life
Pepper pealed away to reveal a hidden ivory face
As if the mask of the impending storm
Had lifted to reveal the
Lightning that doomed the sky.
The splashing of clouds had already fallen
An attempt to decompose the eroding tree
With wet worm-like claws
Sprouting from a large labyrinth lined with green
Softened by dripping oceans boarding the night
The branches floated like a spider's web
Skin blowing patiently, waiting for a storm
And then the wind shifts direction and he waves his arms
And I see him
The persona of the tree is trapped in time.
He's bent, curved like an aging man
His arms reached back, body twisted foreword
Ready to jump or find gravity
Spring foreword
Fall back
Daylight traps him
Curved because he does not know which way the sun moved
Blind because he can only be seen in moonlight 09/03/2005
Author's Note: I was walking back to the dorm from te library one evening and there was a storm coming. You could see the lightning in the distance and hear the thunder. And I turned to watch the sky for a little bit and I saw a tree that I had seen a thousand times walking to and from my classes, bu it looked different, and this is what it looked like
