a view from the top

by Angela Thomas

I used to cry when I watched happy ending movies because
they always left me feeling empty and alone. Now, I smile
because somewhere, I know you're watching a TV show
about some woman who needs to take her dogs in a cab

to the vet in Manhattan and is finding it more of a task
than she had thought. You watch this strange woman
and you smile because it makes you think of me. I've got
some heck of a view from the top of my miniature

apartment - the skyline lit up like a four year old's reebok
sneakers playing hopscotch - and I only want to share
it with you. Looking through this window, I am calmed
and reassured. I am breathless on the subway and grinning

on the stairs. I want to give you a piece of my world, I want
to take your breath and leave you grinning, with this - this view.
