Leaving the Asylum

by S. Pelham Flood

Steven, now listen here,
I say, I say let’s go crazy,
let’s be queer, let’s go dancing
in the streets.

Beats, thumps, grinds—release
those rainbows from your lips,
screeching. Let plumes of glittering
acid trails trail in your wake.

Get up now and move,
shake what you’ve got, lest
there be nothing left…the party
is now, today, there’ll be nothing
more tomorrow

except fear, shrill cries
of foulness, empowered FCC’s,
moral high-elephants, castrating
zealots all marching along,
no less offensive
than yesterday’s parade.

Fight them Steven and fight hard,
they are lions out to feed, talons
ready for slicing. The lines
are drawn and we, the steaks,
laid out for feast.

So dance Steven, dance
through all the ranks, snap
like the battle flag and drip
with wet paint as you decorate
the world with old closet doors.
