sealed with a kiss

by Betania Tesch

You would have me believe
we could seal this like a letter
with lipstick unsmeared.

You do not want to destroy
that perfect imprint,
the crest of our truncated love affair:
a mouth cracked just before gasping.

I try to tell you it will never be
completely closed
even with my lips painfully stuck
to the envelope in which we attempt
to muffle our moaned reality.

As I pull away,
my tongue slips and slices open
and a shimmering pink streak
colors in the crevice.

And while others will never see
the difference so subtle,
you will know that this kiss
only opened us further

to the ashen inked
clandestined possibilites
splotched with tears
hidden in this
letter I will never send.

Author's Note: figured I might as well start to get over it.

This is beautiful in form, metaphor, and tone, and I won't muddy it by saying anything more than that, and: thank you. --Richard

A piquant morsel, skillfully crafted. I always love your stuff because though I know you agonize over them, they still feel fresh and not over-worked. -A.H.
