Pineapple Faith

by Jane E Pearce

I saw God in the produce section

handing out samples of fresh pineapple,

.

skewered on toothpicks, yellow and shiny

to gaping mouths hungry for a faith

.

without seeds to spit, ready

when needed, and sweet to taste.

.

Many sampled but few bought

the big  spiny fruit with a green leaf hat.

.

Paid for, bagged, and put in the trunk,

the pineapple pulsed and rolled with the ride,

.

while viscous red juice oozed from its side,

and glistened in the darkness.
