six miles

by Kalikala Smith

Six miles to you
in any direction
your walls are stronger than mine.
Six miles to you
I can't handle the duration
of trying to reach maybe a glimpse of you.
Six miles to freedom.
Six miles to love.
Six miles to anything
that I've ever dreamed of.
Six miles to dreaming.
Six miles to fame.
Six miles is a long way
to catch a drop of rain.
Six miles to you
in any direction
is tragic and true.
Six miles all I have
to lead me to you.

All begins with one step...powerful repetition reinforcing the significance of that one number in your life. "Six miles to anything/that I've ever dreamed of" placed in the middle of the poem opens the way for not only the love waiting, but anything imaginable.

This piece makes me think of an intersection, and any road can lead to a turning point in one's life. Very introspective work..
