Mean Soft Shoe

by Jane E Pearce

They would not stay

no matter how strong my clasp,

I could not void the slippage

oozing from my grasp.

.

Drum beats from a purple sky

lured them to dance with the stars

waltz with Casseopeia,

and mighty Orion too, while

the smiling moon stepped up

and did a mean soft shoe.

.

Sometimes I think of the purple sky,

but someone clasps me tight to stay,

so I dream of a waltz with Strauss,

and a charleston with Joplin too

then a grand finale, when the moon

does his mean soft shoe.
