friday bloody friday

by Peter Humphreys

mangled shops
mangled cars
mangled people
arms
legs
shovelled
souls in plastic bags
born
by men with hollow
sleepless eyes
hic est enim
corpus meum:
Ireland?

Author's Note: 'Bloody Friday' is the name given to the events that occurred in Belfast on Friday 21 July 1972. During that afternoon, the Provisional IRA planted and exploded 22 bombs which, in the space of 75 minutes, killed 9 people and seriously injured approximately 130 others. This poem was written the day after those events. However, given the announcement yesterday by the Provisional IRA of an apparent full cessation of hostilities, I felt that it should once more be shared. Lest we forget.
